It's Valentines Day, Love WMSE

Starting today, WMSE is starting an online Fund Drive. Since Valentines Day is right around the corner, the Fun(d) Drive is appropriately themed with three pledge levels, each with their own SURPRISE reward. I've gone on at length on The Shape of Rock with my thoughts of why WMSE is so great, but let me just quickly throw this out there.

As a incredibly proud resident of Milwaukee, I am burst with pride that as a city we have such a great cultural resource in WMSE. There are a lot of great cities out there, Milwaukee is one of them and WMSE is one of the reasons that Milwaukee is so great. A publicly supported radio station that is routed in supporting local culture (not just music mind you, WMSE loves art, food, etc). WMSE is truly something special and deserves your support. The more I listen to Strange Mercy and the more I see of Annie Clark, the more I am appreciating her. I just love the contrast of the slow, shyly beautiful songs with the dissonant and dark overtones. Here's a new video for the song "Cheerleader" off of Strange Mercy.

Grand Duchy Plan New Release While the Books Call It a Day

The Books have decided that they cannot move forward as a band, more info over at Tiny Mix Tapes. Nick Zammuto, one half of the Books, will be releasing a new album on his own. It sounds like there is still some new (already recorded) music from the Books that will be makings its way out at some point in the future.

Meanwhile; Frank Black and his wife, Violet Clark, are set to follow-up their debut album, Petit Fours, under the Grand Duchy moniker with a new album titled: Let the People Speak, on Sonic Unyon Records. Let the People Speak is due on April 10th, a tracklist is available over at Tiny Mix Tapes.

Wilco recently played "Whole Love" on Conan, the title track to their latest album, Whole Love. They also performed "Dawned on Me" which you can check out over at Pitchfork.

Wilco also have a Popeye video for their song "Dawned on Me" which was created with King Features.

New Music from Yellow Ostrich

Yellow Ostrich made a lot of news last year with their excellent album The Mistress (which made my own Top Ten List) and they are apparently a band that is not intent on resting on their laurels as they will be releasing a brand new album Strange Land on March 6th (and you can download "Marathon Runner" at their website).

They will also be stopping by the Cactus Club on Sunday, March 11th.

Doomtree is Coming to Town

Doomtree, the Minneapolis hip-hop collective, will be hitting the Turner Hall Ballroom on Saturday, February 25th in support of their latest collective album, No Kings. They recently released a video for "Bangarang" off of No Kings, which features Har Mar Superstar (and of course he gets naked). Enjoy.

The Melvins are Headed to Milwaukee with Unsane

The Melvins will be bringing Unsane with them to the Turner Hall Ballroom on Tuesday night, May 1st. Unsane recently announced that they will be releasing a new album, Wrecked, on March 20th, via Alternative Tentacles. Wrecked will be the first new release from Unsane since 2007's Visqueen. A tracklist for Wrecked is available over at Punknews.org.

The Best of 2011

Fresh off of a weekend of non-stop Christmas treats and dinners here is a rundown of my favorite albums from 2011. I also suggest that you check out WMSE's Sonic Diet for a long and incredibly varied compilation of lists from WMSE's talented DJ's.

First up a list of albums that deserve recognition this year but didn't make my top ten list, in no particular order:

Head on Electric/ Sleep Slaughter Sheep/ Dust Medical Records: I picked up this album late in the year and initially overlooked it on my list but a couple of more times through this album and I realized it deserves a place on this list. Sleep Slaughter Sheep is a fan mix of flat track garage rock, hazy pop tinged with country flavor. It's definitely a fun listen.

Protestant/ Stalemate/ Halo of Flies: Angry, technical hardcore from Milwaukee.

The Black Keys/ El Camino/ Nonesuch: The Black Keys at their most poppy.
The Midwest Beat/ Gone Not Lost/ Dusty Medical Records: Jangly 60’s styled garage pop. The Midwest Beat add a little grit to their sound this time around.
The Customary Silence/ Foul Thoughts/ Self Release: Jesus Lizard informed, bombastic post-rock. It’s a raw nerve all of the way through the album.
Danger Mouse & Danielle Luppi/ Rome: The Original Motion Soundtrack/ Parlophone: This is another album that really sets an atmosphere. The inspiration is that the album is a soundtrack for a fictional spaghetti western but the music would also work as the best soundtrack to a James Bond film in years.
EMA/ Past Life Martyred Saints/ Sourtrain Transmission: A sparse, tense and personal album.
The United Sons of Toil/ When the Revolution Comes, Everything Will Be Beautiful/ Phratry: Politically motivated noise rock from Madison in the vein of Unsane.
Joy Formidable/ The Big Roar/ Atlantic: Huge swirling guitars surround catchy tunes that are reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain and Sonic Youth.
St. Vincent/ Strange Mercy/ 4AD: A delicately beautiful yet slightly ugly album. St. Vincent makes the contrasting emotions work to her advantage on an album that is immensely rewarding.
Collections of Colonies of Bees/ Giving/ Hometapes: Amazing math rock from Milwaukee. This album embodies exactly what I wanted the new Battles album (Gloss Drop) to be. Giving is intricate, peppy and a fun listen.
Astronautalis/ This is Our Science/ Fake Four Inc.: Astronautalis is a fantastic story teller that adds tones of indie rock into his hip-hop aesthetic. This is Our Science continues to refine his story telling and songwriting chops.

My favorite albums from 2011:

10.) The Black Lips/ Arabia Mountain/ Vice: The Black Lips continue to hone their song writing chops and additional production on Arabia Mountain value helps out (who would have thought). This is a jangly pop record and the Black Lips at their best.

T8.) Absolutely/ Learns to Love Mistakes/ Self Release: Careening punk rock (but some much more than just punk rock) that wears a love for Unwound on it’s sleeve. A fantastic, abrasive rock and roll record.
T8.) King’s Horses/ Polis/ Self Release: Soaring, meandering guitar driven indie rock.
7.) The Dirt Daubers/ Wake Up, Sinners/ Colonel Knowledge: J.D. Wilkes (of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers) project with his wife is throw back bluegrass. This album is a combination of original tunes and covers. An extremely fun listen.
6.) Zola Jesus/ Conatus/ Sacred Bones: Zola Jesus knows how to create a mood.
5.) Yellow Ostrich/ The Mistress/ Barsuk: The vocal harmonies and samples caught my ear and never let go.
4.) The Hussy/ Cement Tomb Mind Control/ Slow Fizz: Catchy pop tunes wrapped in raucous echo-soaked garage punk. Think of a poppy version of the New Bomb Turks turned down just a notch that hail from Madison!
3.) Tom Waits/ Bad As Me/ Anti-: A highly anticipated album the delivers. One of Tom Waits best and most consistent albums. Waits mixes his trademark carnival atmosphere with fantastic slow tunes. “Hell Broke Luce” is nothing short of blistering.
2.) The Kills/ Blood Pressures/ Domino: Insanely catchy, the Kills glitchy and sexually tense garage rock at it’s best. The slower songs that comprise the middle of the album (“DNA”, Baby Says” and “The Last Goodbye”) may be best Kills work yet.
1.) Northless/ Clandestine Abuse/ Halo of Flies: Brilliantly heavy and absolutely gorgeous all at the same time. Northless mix their doom metal with math rock undertones to wonderful effect. A challenging listen that is worth every minute.

First Impression of the Dub Trio's IV

Check out my first impression of the the Dub Trio's IV out now on ROIR Records over at WMSE's Sonic Diet, plus there's the video for "Control Issues Controlling Your Mind".

Tiny Mix Tapes is reporting that Built to Spill is planning on hitting the studio to record new music. The new album may not be released until 2013 and will follow up There Is No Enemy, released in 2009.

Kevin Shields (of My Bloody Valentine) is also starting his own label, named Pickpocket. And RTX is reforming as Black Banana, who will be releasing their "debut" album Rad Times Express IV via Drag City on January 31st.

J. Robbins Stays Busy With Office Work

J. Robbins (one of my favorite musician/ producers: Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels) has a new album in the work from a new band, Office of Future Plans. The self titled album is tentatively scheduled to be released on November 21st. The band also includes Darren Zentek (of Kerosene 454, Oswego and Channels), Gordon Withers (of Bells, The Pauses and collaborations with Jawbox) and Brooks Harlan (of Avec and War on Women).

New Music from the Black Keys

It appears that the Black Keys will be making the internet (and all of the associated rags, blogs, tubes and what-have-yous) their bitch. At least until their new album El Camino drops on December 6th. In the mean time you can pick up a "Lonely Boy" as a 12" vinyl single on Record Store Day, Black Friday Edition (yes, the day after Thanksgiving) which will also include the song "Run Right Back." Both songs will be included on El Camino.

My thoughts regarding Zola Jesus' exciting new album Conatus (Sacred Bones) are available as Sonic Diet's Song of the Day (with a video and everything).

Tom Waits has a brand new album coming out officially tomorrow titled Bad As Me, on Anti- Records. It's getting good reviews so far and he's been a busy man, check out interviews with Tom at Pitchfork Media, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Heads up from Muzzle of Bees.

Unbeknownst to me the Dub Trio also have an album coming out tomorrow on ROIR appropriately titled IV (as it is their fourth full length). Russian Circles are also dropping a new album tomorrow title Empros on Sargent House.

IfIHadAHiFi & Northless Tomorrow Night in Madison

Madison types and those who might be in the area tomorrow night, I just heard that IfIHadAHiFi and Northless will be playing at the Sett at 9pm. For those of you older folk (like me) the Sett is located at Union South on the UW campus and is also the scientific name for a badger burrow (don't say the Shape of Rock never taught you anything).

Northless released the fantastic Clandestine Abuse earlier this year on Halo of Flies. Which remains one of my favorite albums of the year.

IfIHadAHiFi is had their The Nada Surf EP delayed due to some legal issues with the WWE and it is now scheduled for an early 2012 release on Latest Flame.

The piece was written during my first listen to The Less You Know, the Better. I'm hoping to continue this as a series where I catalog my thoughts about an album during the first couple of listens.

Wolves in the Throne Room/ Celestial Lineage: Brand new album from Wolves in the Throne Room. There are moments of absolute brilliance on this album in ways only Wolves in the Throne Room can create. The longer tracks (10 minutes plus) perfectly combine atmospheric, almost classical strings with driving death metal. Highly recommended.
Emelda May/ Explode: This album features a pretty strong beginning and ending. The middle tends to get a little bit slow. The rockabilly Emelda May puts out is nothing ground breaking, however her vocals are worth checking out.

Lisa Ridgely Performs this Weekend & Icarus Himself Hits the Road

I'm playing drums in Lisa Ridgely's new band, which is so fresh and new it doesn't even have a proper name yet. Despite this, we will be making our debut backing Lisa this Saturday night at Linneman's Riverwest Inn (1001 East Locust Ave.). The show starts at nine and features, Joey Leal, The Revenge Society and the Up & Atoms.

It's gonna be fun and the perfect follow-up to WMSE's 10th Annual Food Slam happening Friday night (6-9pm) at the MSOE Grohmann Museum (1000 North Broadway) which makes for a fantastic venue for this event. Thirty of Milwaukee's tastiest restaurants, caterers and food vendors will be on hand demonstrating exactly what makes them so tasty. It's delicious and fun, stop on down to the WMSE Studio's to get your ticket today (there's only a few left, don't sleep on it kids!).

And finally Icarus Himself is releasing there new album Career Culture next week on Science of Sound Records (which you can stream below). They will be hitting the road in support of Career Culture starting this weekend:

I'm guessing that you probably haven't been able to avoid all of the press on R.E.M. calling it quits this week so lets move on from that.

Guided By Voices announced that the culmination of the recent "original line-up" tour will result in a new album titled, Let's Go Eat the Factory!, due out on January 1, 2012.

In significantly sadder news, Absolutely Kosher Records has announced that they have one more record in the hopper and after that they will cease releasing new albums and focus on maintaining their catalog.

Converge is also reportedly finishing up writing the follow-up to the 2009 album Axe to Fall. Here is a very cool pic of Converge performing (pulled from their site):

Last night TV on the Radio brought their rock and roll to the Pabst Theater. The show was close to being sold out and those looking for seats late ended up in the third, Mezzanine Level. The concert featured mostly songs from TV on the Radio's latest album, Nine Types of Light with a number of songs from their previous albums, including one of my favorites, the rocking "Wolf Like Me" off of The Return to Cookie Mountain. Maybe it's that St. Vincent has great publicists, perhaps she is the hardest working musician right now with the most interesting news happening at the moment, including a date on the Late Show with David Letterman this coming Monday night. I'm excited to announce that members of the local band, Codpiece, will be joining me on The Shape of Rock next week at around 8am to talk about their latest album, The Chamber of Solitude as well as to let you know about a couple of their upcoming shows including September 3rd at the Riverhorse Bar and September 24th at Center Street Daze.

Then on September 13th members of the Customary Silence will also be joining me on The Shape of Rock. You've most likely heard me tracking through and generally loving their album, Foul Thoughts over the last couple of months.

Meanwhile, yesterday both Tiny Mix Tapes and Pitchfork Media reported that Tom Waits' next album, Bad As Me, is set to drop on October 25th from Anti- Records. A track list for the upcoming album is below:

The sound quality for this morning's show was a little less than stellar. I noticed a fair amount of clipping throughout the show this morning, for which I apologize. The netbook I am using to DJ from is slightly under powered for what I'm asking of it, although it has been performing like a champ for the last three to four weeks.

However, when I forget to plug it into the wall to run off of AC power, the power saving mode on the computer appears to rob the little guy of whatever extra processing power it needs; hence the excessive amount of clipping this morning. On the flip side, the Asus battery did power through the entire show (including heavy processor use, an external USB powered hard drive and a USB sound card). So kudos there!

I have learned my lesson and next week I will be sure to actually plug the power supply into the computer, not just the receptacle...

Radio Summer Camp: Saturday Night @ the Bay Brew Haus

I caught the last song of the night's opening band, The Pills, who play hard, driving punk rock. I look forward to checking out their entire set the next time they play out.

Kid, You'll Move Mountains hail from the Chicago area but have ties to Milwaukee (featuring an ex-member of Twin Star). They overflowed the Brew Haus stage with all of their instruments and put together a tight set of indie rock.

A couple of songs into Bleed's set Saturday night at the Bay View Brew Haus, they introduced themselves: "We are Bleed and we like to rock." Simple, yet incredibly true as Bleed continued to tear through their own brand of Sonics influenced garage punk. Bleed has only played a handful of shows here in Milwaukee over the last several years due to members living in other cities across the country and it was a true treat to have them back for the Radio Summer Camp. Their set included an Etta James cover, a couple of "new" songs plus plenty of familiar favorites and Bob's requisite performance atop a table within the crowd.

It was a real pleasure for the everyone in attendance to see Bleed play live again and the Bob, Dave and Bart threw down the rock as if they've been playing regularly for the last several years.

I haven't seen Jaill perform before so I don't have the ability compare their performance last night earlier ones, but to me they seemed somewhat flat and a little distracted. At one point they mentioned having taken some time off of music recently. However, it was very nice to hear live versions of the catchy pop from That's How We Burn. I look forward to catching them at the Cactus Club on October 12th.

Live Fantômas Out on September 6th

Back on December 31st of 2008, Fantômas performed their re-imagination of horror, crime and sci-fi film soundtracks, The Director's Cut, at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. As fate would have it, this performance of The Director's Cut, in it's entire was documented and will be released on DVD by Mike Patton's Ipecac Records on September 6th. The DVD also includes additional covers of Al Green's Simply Beautiful and T-Rex's Chariot Choogle. If you're only interested in the audio from the concert it will also be available via digital download at Ipecac's website, but you will be missing out on a commentary track from Neil Hamburger.

WMSE Radio Summer Camp is in Full Swing

Call Me Lightning appropriately kicked off this year's Radio Summer Camp Wednesday night at Turner Hall Ballroom. Pulling heavily from last years' exceptional When I Am Gone My Blood Will Be Free, Call Me Lightning delivered an amazingly tight, rocking set. If you haven't seen these guys live yet, I highly recommend that you make it a point to check them out. Their live set will make you fall even more in love with My Blood Will Be Free.

My turn at the WMSE RSC Pass table caused me to catch Tweak Bird's set from the foyer. But I can still tell you that the two brothers that form Tweak Bird create a fantastic wall of noise. The set ended abruptly with Tweak Bird asking if they could "get more guitar in the monitor" which I found puzzling at the time. Thursday morning the AV Club caught me up and unfortunately Tweak Bird had a mishap with when their guitar amp crashed to the ground which cut their set short.

Ted Leo came out and let us all know he would be starting his set early, just after he went to the bathroom. Ted and the Pharmacists started their set out with "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?" and played roughly an hour long set that pulled from their entire catalog. Even though Ted is nursing a sore knee, which was pretty evident as he half hopped off stage at the end of the night, the night was still pretty lively. Ted kept the banter away from his typical political topics but still showed off his whit, which netted him two bras and a sweaty sock. It was a fantastic evening full of rock and an even better way to start this year's Radio Summer Camp.

I didn't make either of the shows last night but tonight the Summer Camp ramps up into full swing. My suggestions for tonight's viewing include the following:

Ramma Lamma hitting the Bay View Brew Haus stage at 9:30 followed by Drugs Dragons then Dosh starts at midnight over at the Cactus Club
If none of those are your speed, check out Group of Altos at ten down at Club Garibaldi, Melissa Czarnik at eleven up at the Stonefly Brewery then Heidi Spencer and the Rare Birds at Linneman's Riverwest Inn.

Saturday night brings you even more fun:

Wereworm brings you instrumental post-rock over at the Cactus Club starting at ten. Bleed makes a rare appearance at the Bay Biew Brew Haus at 11 tomorrow night followed by Jaill.
An alternative would be to hang out at Linneman's Riverwest Inn for some local jazz with Nineteen Thirteen at ten followed by Conrad Plymouth. Otherwise Blueprint hits the Stonefly Brewery stage at ten followed by Juiceboxx.

New Music from Primus on the Way

Primus is slated to release their first new studio album in 11 years, Green Naugahyde, on September 12th. Long time guitarist Larry LaLonde is back in the fold with Les Claypool along with Jay Lane, who played with Les back in the band Sausage along with a couple different iterations of the Primus line-up.
If you are so inclined you can pre-order Green Naugahyde here. An oldie now, but still a goodie, "Tommy the Cat" off of Sailing the Seas of Cheese.

Wolves in the Throne Room Working on a new Album

Wolves in the Throne Room are working on a new full-length album for Southern Lord Records. The yet unnamed album is being recorded in Seattle with Randall Dunn, who produced Two Hunters and Black Cascade with WITTR. Some insight into the creation of the album is available at WITTR's website. Meanwhile, here's a live version of "Cleansing" off of Two Hunters.

As we enter the second half of the baseball season with a newly reinforced Milwaukee Brewers' bullpen and music sales have risen for the first time in seven years, more details on St. Vincent's forthcoming album are surfacing.
Strange Mercy is due out on September 13th on 4AD. The new album is being produced by John Congelton, notably of the Texas post-punk outfit the pAper chAse.
St. Vincent will be at the Pabst Theatre here in Milwaukee on September 3rd. Here's a track list:

Here are a couple of articles I missed while I was road tripping to and from New Mexico and exhausting my dog in the hills around Santa Fe.

A track list for Zola Jesus' new album, Conatus, is now available over at Tiny Mixtapes. Conatus is due out on October 4th on Sacred Bones. You can catch her down at the Pitchfork Music Festival on July 16th before she heads to Europe.

Tiny Mix Tapes also has news on the Beauty Pill reuniting for a new album.

The Dum Dum Girls will be releasing their sophomore full length album, Only in Dreams, on September 27th via Sub Pop. Which follows up a strong He Gets Me High EP put out earlier this year. A track list, details and a video are available over at Pitchfork Media.

Hot Water Music signed to Rise Records and are expected to have a new album out next spring, more details over at Punk News.

Finally, a new music video for an unreleased Mastodon track called "Deathbound" released in conjunction with Adult Swim (thanks to listener Paul Hiebing for the heads up on this one).

I highly recommend you check it out, it's a fantastic continuation of the 60's inspired garage pop Midwest Beat dished out on their debut full length, At the Gates.
